Which Class is Right for Me?

ASANA

(Postures)

According to the yogic tradition and guidelines of Mr. Iyengar, yoga asana classes focus on correct body alignment, sequencing of postures and timing, allowing the student to learn and practice harmoniously.

Props (belts, blocks, blankets, etc.) are used when needed to facilitate learning and to help the body into the correct positions. Through the practice of asana, students develop strength, stamina, stability, concentration, and inner calmness.

PRANAYAMA

(Breath Control)

Instruction in Pranayama (prana is “life force”; yama is “discipline” or “control”) is provided in intermediate classes.

This teaches the student control of the breath through the practice of deliberate rhythms of inhalation, exhalation and retention. Through the practice of pranayama, the student further develops the skill of withdrawing the senses and calming the mind.

PHILOSOPHY

Iyengar Yoga is guided by the eight step path (ashtanga yoga) of spiritual fulfillment, as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In every class, the instructors weave in the philosophy and spiritual wisdom of this path as well as contemporary teachings. This enriches the students’ experience and gives greater insight to the power of the path of Yoga, on and off the mat.

About

What’s Special About Iyengar Yoga

Using physical alignment as a starting point, Iyengar Yoga encourages the spread of intelligence throughout the body, the growth of self-awareness, and an experience of the asanas (postures) as “meditation” in action.

Our teachers are Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructors (CIYT), which means we are trained to guide students of all ages and abilities. Clear demonstrations, observation of students, and knowledge of sequencing create classes where students can progress and have fun.

As a student, the Iyengar Yoga Certification Mark is your guarantee of a yoga experience that is safe, suitable for individual physical conditions, and beneficial for both body and mind.

All of the instructors’ attention to detail, and advanced level training supports continual growth and helps me gain access to advanced level poses.

  • Levels 1 through 3 that allow students to progress in their practice;
  • Gentle class accommodates limitations while staying true to the Iyengar method
  • Care classes for pain relief and self-care
  • Private sessions for 1-on-1 instruction

Jane Y., SarasotaGentle Yoga is the first form of exercise that I’ve done in years that I look forward to participating in each week.  The class is gently intense in its approach because the instructor designs the movements to address each of the class member’s physical strengths and limitations.  I always feel physically stronger when I leave her class.
