"Yoga is nothing if it is not perfect harmony of the body, senses, mind and intellect, reason, consciousness and self. When all these are integrated that is true Yoga." - B.K.S. Iyengar

About Iyengar Yoga

BKS-iyengar-sarasota-flWhat is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga is characterized by an emphasis on precision of alignment in the yoga postures, the use of props to help students of all ability levels achieve correct alignment, and an understanding of the therapeutic potential of yoga. We begin with the body: muscles, bones, and breath. Through asanas (postures), we explore the work of art that is this gift we receive at birth. Mr. Iyengar calls the body a temple, and asanas our prayers.

Who is B.K.S. Iyengar?

B.K.S. Iyengar is the founder of Iyengar. He was a sickly child and was sent to study with the famous yogi Sri T. Krishnamacharya when he was 15 years old. The asana practice improved his health, and Krishnamacharya encouraged Guruji to begin teaching in 1937. He spent many hours each day learning and experimenting in various techniques. As his methods improved, the number of students at his classes increased and his fame spread. In 1952, the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin. arranged for Iyengar to teach abroad in London, Switzerland, Paris and elsewhere. This was the first time that many Westerners had been exposed to yoga, and the practice slowly became well known. In 1966, Iyengar published Light on Yoga, an international best-seller. More than anything else, this book made yoga an international phenomenon. In 1975, Iyengar opened the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, in memory of his recently departed wife. He officially retired from teaching in 1984, but continues to be very active in the world of Iyengar Yoga, teaching special classes and writing books. Iyengar's daughter Geeta and son Prashant have become internationally acclaimed teachers in their own right.
